Joined: EU 2004 Eurozone Not Yet Schengen 2007 Poland has been the most successful of the former communist states with the exception of East Germany, which is Angela Merkel has provided the dominant figure of the current European Union. Former Polish prime minister Donald Tusk is President of the European Council that brings together the leaders of the 28 member countries. He is now the leading bureaucrat dealing with Brexit as the European Council is taking the lead rather than the European Commission. Poland has benefited greatly from the freedom of movement rules within the European Union with 2 million Poles leaving their home country and Poland prospering economically. Yet not everyone in Poland is happy as it has also experienced a large amount of inward migration and anti immigration sentiment has increased. The Polish electorate has responded by voting into government the National Law party on a platform of defending traditional Polish values.
