Joined: EU 1995 Eurozone 1999 Schengen 2001 Finland gained its independence from Russia, with which it shares a long land border to the east. To the north it has a border with Norway and its only European Union border is with Sweden to the west. Finland and Sweden Joined the European Union 1995 and Norway was to join at the same time, but for a second time the Norwegian electorate rejected joined the bloc. Finland belongs to the Schengen visa free travel area, in which Norway and Sweden are also members, but Russia is not. Finland was a founding member of the Eurozone in 1999.
